Part 7: The Cost of Discipleship

1. Spiritual authority without spiritual dependence will always eventually fail. Lk 9:37-43, Jn 15:5; Zech 4:6; 2 Cor 12:9–11
2. Listen carefully to hear what Jesus says and not what you want to hear. Luke 9:44-45, Mk 4:24, Lk 8:18
3. Worldly thinking distorts and challenges true discipleship. Luke 9:46-56, Romans 12:2; Philippians 2:3–5; James 3:14–17
   • They valued:
     • Success over faithfulness. Lk 9:37-43
     • Status over humility. Lk 9:46-48
     • Exclusivity over Kingdom unity. Lk 9:49-50
     • Retaliation over mercy. Lk 9:51-56
     • Convenience over sacrifice. Lk 9:57-62
4. The Kingdom of God reverses true greatness. Luke 9:46-50
   • Measured by:
     • Humility over position. Vv. 46-48
     • Service over recognition. Vs. 48
     • How we treat the overlooked. Vv. 47-48
5. Following Jesus requires total, undivided allegiance. Luke 9:51-62
   • Following Him may cost comfort. Vv. 57-58
   • Following Him cannot be delayed. Vv. 59-60
   • Following Him requires a forward-focused heart. Vv. 61-62
